RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Head nurses supervise nursing activities in a variety of settings. While some patient care is usually required, the nursing supervisor’s duties include:

A head nurse is expected to undertake normal nursing duties when staff resources are lacking. Typical duties in this role include monitoring patients’ vital signs, administering medication and changing wound dressings.

Initiates and maintains work schedules for the nursing staff in her department. In addition to assigning duties and organizing shift patterns, she ensures medical records are securely stored and accurately maintained.
Assess general hospital ward areas and patients’ rooms to ensure they are kept in a hygienic and comfortable state.
Accompany doctors on their rounds of patient visits and take notes of any special instructions with regard to treatment or care changes.
Ensure all care and treatment activity is carried out in strict accordance with the hospital’s regulations.
Responsible for ordering drugs, medical solutions and equipment needed for patient care.
Must keep accurate records of the amounts and types of medication administered to individual patients so they can assess recovery times and speak to physicians about treatment changes when necessary.
Oversees nurses administering medication to ensure all regimens are in strict accordance with the physician’s instructions
Identify and resolve any conflicts among nursing staff members to ensure a positive work environment is maintained.
Ensure nurses are fully trained and capable of performing the duties assigned to them.
Assist in preparing training materials and techniques for nurses failing to perform their duties correctly and for those recently hired.
Makes sure that equipment and other supplies are in stock Field complaints from patients or their relatives regarding issues with nursing care or the efficacy of treatment regimens. If a head nurse cannot deal with the complaint herself, she might refer it to the director of nursing or the facility administrator.

Communication:

Communicates effectively with other members of the health team in planning and providing patient care.
Communicate appropriately with the patients is a key part of the job, as is working in partnership with other health care professionals to ensure continuity of care.
Records relevant patient’s information clearly and accurately in accordance with nursing policies and procedures.
Utilizes established chain of commands for appropriate communication and problem solving.

Interpersonal Relations:

· Maintains effective rapport with patients, visitors, physicians, colleagues and supervisors.
· Cooperates and willingly assists others.
· Recognizes limitations and asks for assistance as needed.
· Contributes towards an atmosphere of mutual trust, acceptance , respect and to be courteous to all persons, families, visitors and hospital staff members.
· Gives and accepts constructive criticism in a positive manner.
· Assists in the orientation of new staff.
